His Banner Over Us is Love

Many shades of meanings of beauty, strength and protection inspired this month's poem "His Banner Over Us is Love."

Irises standing tall and proud at Memorial Day remind me to think of those who have given their lives in preserving the freedom and values represented by our country's flag. I also think of the colors, the standard, of The One whose banner over us is love.

He brought me to the banqueting house,
and his banner over me was love
[for love waved as a protecting and
comforting banner over my head
when I was near him].
Song of Solomon 4:5
Amplified Bible

We who live in democracies may not have reflected upon what is meant by being under a sovereign's standard. However, we do pledge allegiance to our flag and realize the meaning accorded to our colors.

These nuances are captured in a review of an Horticulture Magazine article. IRISES PLAY A SPECTACULAR ROLE in spring's glorious celebration. In the eyes of many gardeners, the rainbow of tall bearded irises is the most spectacular show of the season. Not only do these irises come in colors that range from whites through almost-reds, yellows, oranges, pinks, blues, and lavenders to almost black, they also come in many exquisite combinations and patterns of colors.*

Blend these many ideas and the picture and words of this month's poem take shape.

His Banner Over Us is Love

God's eloquent flags,
royal purple and
ruffled violet,
stand tall
in the springtime
our Creator's magnificence
and care.

Breathe in the fragrance
and beauty
of our King,
knowing his banner
over us
is love.
