DAY LILIES AT DAWN

At dawn
day lilies
stretch and catch
drops of liquid
rays of light
gathering vitality
for their
day in the sun.

Straightforward in
elegant simplicity
their resplendent
golds and oranges glow
more sumptuously textured
than any of Solomon's
most finely woven
royal robes.

Do they know that
tomorrow...
they will be gone
already having fulfilled
exactly
each individual bloom's
God-ordained
destiny?

"And why worry about your clothes?
Look at the field lilies!
They don't worry about theirs.
Yet King Solomon in all his glory
was not clothed as beautifully as they.
And if God cares so wonderfully
for flowers
that are here today
and gone tomorrow,
won't he more surely care for you,
O men of little
faith? ...."
